Today, it is quite rare to find a LAN or a WAN operating independently; they are typically interconnected. The connection of two or more networks forms an internetwork, commonly known as the internet. This interconnected system of networks is what we refer to as the internet (with a lowercase "i" when referring to private internetworks and uppercase "I" for the global public Internet). Internetwork Let's say an organization operates two offices, one located on the East Coast and the other on the West Coast. Each office is equipped with a Local Area Network (LAN) that enables all employees within the respective office to communicate with each other. To make the communication between employees at different offices possible, the management leases a point-to-point dedicated WAN from a service provider, such as a telephone company, and connects the two LANs.
